In the past, I didn't go into Thanksgiving with a strategy. I would just eat everything that came my way.

This always ended with an uncomfortable full feeling, some heartburn, and a few extra pounds.

This year, I'm not just going to eat everything that is presented to me. There will be too many large meals, with all sorts of snacks and baked goods in between.

My best bet is to find foods that have the highest saturated fat content so I can avoid them. I think I will try to avoid all desserts. Even if I end up having one or two (especially if it is a group serving where I don't want to draw attention to myself by saying no), I still will be doing much better compared to just eating all the desserts presented to me.

I'm not sure what else would be good to avoid. I suppose the gravy would have a high saturated fat content depending on how it is made and also the stuffing. These things would be hard to avoid since they only come around once a year, but they are usually made with lots of high fat butter.

I'm not sure how successful I will be, but at least I'll be thinking about my eating habits this Thansgiving instead of going into it with no strategy.

Having a strategy is a good idea, but I only get the big Thanksgiving meal once a year so I usually allow myself to indulge. I like the idea of focusing on what I really want (turkey, stuffing, gravy, etc...) and passing on the appetizers and desserts.

Well, I can't say I was completely successful, but I would say that I did better compared to past years. I did pretty well avoiding desserts and didn't eat anything at the table other than the things I really wanted. My weigh in this morning wasn't too bad.

I just figured out that my main problem is the leftovers. We bought a turkey that was way too big. Leftover turkey is only good in the fridge for a few days so I have been stuffing myself with turkey the past couple of days. We even froze a bunch of it and still there is plenty to eat before it goes bad. I should just toss it instead of thinking I need to gorge myself with turkey. I would invite other people over to help us eat the leftover turkey, but I figure everyone has the same problem.
