I'm trying to find out what type of weight loss strategies works for people.

For me, I have lost weight by reducing my intake of meat, eggs, cheese, and other dairy products.

I used to exercise a lot, but I didn't seem to lose much weight. I fact, when I had a gym membership I gained weight, because I would work out (not very hard - mainly just walking on a treadmill watching sports) and then I would stop at one of the 20 fast food restaurants between the gym and my house.

I also tried instituting "rules" into my life one at a time. I had rules about not eating after 8pm. Push-ups and sit ups in the morning. Only oatmeal in the morning. These rules worked to a certain degree, but the main thing that worked was reducing my portions and drastically reducing the amount of meat I eat.

What has worked for you?

Do you count calories? Weight loss shakes or drugs? Weight loss programs and support groups?

I want to lose more weight so it would be nice to hear what has worked for other people.

I have tried just about everything. Some things have worked and others have not. I ate so many baked potatoes one year that I don't know if I will ever eat another baked potato ever again.

What I figured out is that all of the fad diets are just that. Fads. Not only in the public consciousness, but also in mine. I can't stick with anything that is a gimmick for a long time because I get sick of it.

I agree with you Paul that the main thing that works is just watching what we eat. We can exercise all day and not lose weight if we are eating a burger and fries for lunch.

I try to eat a lot of vegetables and I try to eat small portions. I know I have problems with self control so I try to reduce the situations I am in where I will let myself down. Going to buffets is not a good idea for me. Going to all inclusive resorts is not a good idea for me.

I need to see food as something that I want to eat less of for my health instead of something I want to eat more of for my enjoyment.

I have gotten better over the years, but I am done with the fad diets. They never stick around long enough to make a life changing difference. Instead of diets, I am changing my life by changing my eating habits. It takes practice. I weigh myself every day as a reminder. Grocery shopping in the right frame of mind is very crucial to success.

I hope this helps.

i am definitely not a diet person. so i think my bet would be to just try to ease up on the portions that i eat. i tend to eat beyond the point of being full, which is likely the sole reason for my weight gain. i also need to eat more slowly and let my brain register that i'm content with what i've already eaten. i often eat to quickly, and therefore end up overeating because my brain hasn't gotten the message yet.

I also have noticed that it takes awhile for the brain to realize we have had enough to eat. A strong case for eating slowly or in small portions with more eaten later if necessary.

Sometimes I will tell myself that I can eat more in 15 minutes if I need to and then I get busy and a couple fo hours go by. Stopping before I am full while promising myself I can eat more if needed has been a good strategy.
