I walk four to five miles on a treadmill while watching television when I go to the gym.
My concern is that walking isn't doing enough for me. When I use the stair stepper I get very sweaty and tired after about 20 minutes. I can walk eight miles during a three hour football or baseball game and barely get sweaty.
Is it ok to watch television and take long walks on the treadmill (mainly during the winter) or is it better if I step on the stair master and work myself into a sweat for twenty minutes?
she has a good point and it really does the body good. If I don't streatch after working out, my legs get stiff later in the night making it hard to fall asleep. So I have to get up and do some streatching anyway so might as well do it at the gym.
For the past month, I've been in the treadmill television zone while avoiding the stair stepper. I don't have cable television at home so the treadmill allows me to watch television longer while exercising.
I'm making a personal announcement right here that I intend to spend more time on the stair stepper again.
It was an unintentional experiment, but I don't feel as in shape after spending about a month on just the treadmill. Even though I spent far longer on the treadmill compared to the stair stepper.
Also, two or three hours walking on the treadmill watching television reduces the amount of time I spend weightlifting, streatching, playing basketball, etc...

Maximize your "exercise" portion of your workout by doing things that really get your heart rate going (stair stepper) and then if you just want to spend more time watching tv, go for a long walk on the treadmill as a cool down.
I went to a "lower your cholesterol" class through my health clinic and they said that you don't have to do excessively vigorous exercise to see results, but you do need to get your heart going and work up a little sweat which probably means that just going for a long walk won't be enough. It is good and a healthy thing to do, but if you are trying to lose weight, you probably need to increase the activity level from just walking on a treadmill.
