if you breastfeed, you're proabably familiar with the embarrassing let down reflex. with my first child, it wasn't so bad, but with my second, it's as if my body is thinking, "oh! i know how to do this now!", and it just goes all-out at the sight or sound of a baby, or even if i just talk about my children. which leads me to nursing pads... i try to be environmentally friendly but i must say i'm disappointed in the reusable pad options.
lily padz (silicone) don't always prevent leaks, like they say they do, especially if you're cold -- a-hem. when you're cold, there may be a gap between your skin and the pad, allowing milk to seep in there. then when you go to take them off or feed your baby, the milk drips all over the place. also, lily padz don't last as long as they should. the sticky stuff on mine has worn down so much in only 3 months that i don't dare go braless while wearing them, and i even washed them according to the special instructions.
the washable cloth pads made by several different companies also do not last as long as they should. nor do they wick leaks away from your skin like they should. nor do they look very flattering under clothing -- flaunting their tell-tale circles under even the thickest of sweatshirts.
so, i've resorted to disposables, just as i did with diapers on about month 4 of my first child. i just couldn't stand the inconvenience of it all any more. but if a good eco-friendly product can be produced, i'll be sure to try it out. i feel so guilty throwing away so much stuff now that i have kids. we produce about 3-4 times the amount of garbage we did pre-kids. ugh... are there better options out there? maybe disposable pads made from sustainable bamboo, which i hear is very absorbant. or a washable pad that actually works and is thin enough to go unnoticed.
