Many of us consume way too much sodium each day.

We are only supposed to have 2,000 to 3,000 mg of sodium each day, but most of us have closer to 8,000 to 10,000 mg each day.

Only a small percentage of our sodium intake comes from the salt shaker. Most of it comes from canned and processed foods we eat.

For example, I would think that a can of refried beans would be pretty healthy. However, while it is low in fat and has protein, it has 300 to 500 mg of sodium per serving.

Take a look at a can of soup the next time you are about to eat it. Not only does it say there is a lot fo sodium in it, but the number listed is usually only for half the can of soup. Does anyone eat only a half can of soup?

Too much sodium in our diet can lead to high blood pressure which can lead to heart problems.

I always thought my lack of using the salt shaker was a good solution for reducing my salt intake. My dad always needed to reduce his sodium levels so my mom was always reminding him to stop using the salt shaker so much. I wonder if my mom realized that there was more salt in the type of food we were eating.

I just looked at some of my food to see what the sodium content is. I like to eat red beans and rice. Seems like a healthy option. However, the sodium content is off the charts. Well over 4,000 grams in the entire box - which is what I usually eat in one sitting. That is twice the recommend daily intake of sodium!

I never used to look at the sodium content on lables. I always just looked at fat content. I will be looking at the sodium content from now on. Thanks.

I'm trying to lower my blood pressure so yes I am concerned about sodium.

I'm still concerned about this. My weight is going down. My cholesterol levels are better. However, most of the non-fat stuff I eat has a lot of sodium in it. I guess I need to eat more veggies and fruit so I can be healthy on all levels.
