Many of us consume way too much sodium each day. We are only supposed to have 2,000 to 3,000 mg of sodium each day, but most of us have closer to 8,000 to 10,000 mg each day. Only a small percentage of our sodium intake comes from the salt shake...

I agree 100%. Even processed natural substances, such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) should be avoided. Not only do they contribute to weight gain (the body may not "know" how to process these substances), but some, like HFCS, actually have be...

How Much Should I Weigh?

I often ask myself, "How much should I weigh" but I never knew the answer.

Well, I finally took the time to figure it out.

Generally, the base ideal weight for women at 5 feet tall is 100 pounds. You then add 5 pounds for each inch over 5 feet that you are. For men, the base ideal weight at 5 feet tall is 106 pounds. Add 6 pounds for each inch over 5 feet tall you are.

I, like most Americans, am heavier than I should be.

This places me at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and… Continue

Is My Body Craving Calories?

I have been doing pretty well with my weight lose goals. I have lost 15 pounds within the past couple of months and feel like I can continue doing what I am doing to lose more weight to achieve my ultimate goals.

One problem I am having now is that I think my body is craving calories at the end of the day. I eat a small breakfast and lunch so by the time I get to dinner, my body and mind are ready to feast in a major way.

I thought this was just a mental thing I could control, but it also make… Continue

Temptation And Solution At World's Largest Brat Fest

I live a few blocks form the site of the world's largest brat festival. Each year, I enjoy going to Brat Fest to listen to music and eat brats.

As I am trying to lose weight and be healthier, I did some research and found out that each brat has 8 - 10 grams of saturated fat and over 700 mg of sodium.

In years past, I would sometimes have four or more brats per day. I did this because they are good, cheap, convenient, and all proceeds go to charity. I also enjoyed going to the condiment station… Continue

The First Ten Pounds Was Easy

If you follow my blog, you know I am trying to lose 40 pounds. I'm doing this for my own health and so I can be around as long as possible with my family. It is simple statistics that overweight people have higher instances of heart attacks and diseases.

I have drastically reduced my eating habits as I have cut out a lot of meat and eggs in order to cut down my intake of saturated fats and cholesterol. I also have greatly reduced my portions of food I am consuming. I am trying to focus on eatin… Continue

New Success

I am now at my lowest weight in a couple of years.

I had started trying to lower my cholesterol by not eating meat, dairy nor eggs, but I was still eating large amounts of pasta, bread, and other things.

Now I am still following a vegan diet, but I have also greatly reduced the amount of food I am eating with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Yesterday, I jumped on a scale and saw a number I hadn't seen in a long time. It feels good to see my diet changes having an impact o… Continue

More Than Just Avoiding Cholesterol

I went to my first "reducing your cholesterol" class offered through my health clinic.

I'm glad I went because I learned a lot of things I didn't know before I went.

The biggest thing I took away from the class is that losing weight is the best thing I can do. I can't just focus on cutting meat, dairy, and eggs out of my diet. This will reduce some of my cholesterol levels, but I won't lose weight if I replace these things with lots of pasta, bread, and pie.

All the statistics show that a hea… Continue

Much Less Meat Consumption

I can't say I have entirely stopped eating meat, but I have drastically reduced my consumption of meat. I'm doing this with the goal of lowering both my cholesterol levels and my weight.

I have completely stopped eating eggs. This wasn't that hard to do.

I have also drastically reduced my consumption of dairy products.

So far my wieght has continued to go down. I did see a spike in my wieght when fell off the wagon and had some roast beef, sour cream, and apple pie a couple of times, but I fe… Continue

So Far So Good

The big diet changes I have put into place have been sticking and I am seeing my weight go down.

No eggs, no meat, and very little dairy is not as hard to do as I once thought.

I'm not completely vegetarian so I will not throw something out if I find it has meat or egg in it, but my main goal is to avoid these foods as much as possible to lower both my weight and cholesterol levels.

I saw a low number on the scale this morning I haven't seen in a long time. It motivated me to do my push-ups a… Continue

Big Diet Changes

I'm adding some huge new rules to my diet plan.

After getting a test showing high cholesterol levels, I am taking some drastic steps. I have been trying to lose weight anyway, so I already have some momentum going.

My new rules include not eating meat or dairy. These things were a large part of my former life and are probably the biggest causes of my high cholesterol and weight.

I will probably eat these things again in moderation, but so far, I have just excluded them from my diet completely… Continue
